Live-In Carer Requirements: The Spare Room, Household Meals and the Daily Break
If you are thinking about live-in care for someone you love, three practical questions usually come up. What does the carer need from our home? How do mealtimes work? What happens when the carer takes a break? This guide answers all three plainly. NeeryVille Care is a CQC-registered care provider, and we place live-in carers in homes across England.
The Live-In Carer's Spare Room: What You Need to Provide
A live-in carer lives in your home for the whole placement, so they need a room of their own. Live-in carers are entitled to their privacy, and a rested carer gives better care. The room does not need to be large or fancy. It needs:
A bed with a mattress cover
Bedding and pillows
Somewhere to hang clothes (a wardrobe or a hanger rail) and a drawer for their belongings
Access to a bathroom, either private or shared
Wi-Fi is a nice extra. Carers complete digital care records, and in homes where the mobile signal is weak, Wi-Fi makes that much easier. Neither Wi-Fi nor a wardrobe is a requirement, but both help the carer settle in.
Household Meals: Eating Together or Separately
Every family has its own way of doing mealtimes, and both options work well.
Eating together. Some families like to cook and eat with the carer. Mealtimes become sociable, and the carer gets to know the person's tastes and routines quickly. There is no extra charge to the family for food.
Eating separately. Other families prefer the carer to eat apart, at their own time or in their own space. This keeps family routines private and gives the carer a proper rest at mealtimes. When the carer eats separately, a weekly food allowance is provided. It is all inclusive, with no extra cost to the family.
A mix of both. Some households eat together on some days and separately on others.
Whichever you choose, it is agreed in the care agreement, so everyone knows where they stand. It depends on what your family is happy with.
The Daily Two-Hour Break for Live-In Carers
Every NeeryVille live-in carer has a daily break of about two hours. It gives them time to rest and recharge, so they are fresh and alert when they come back. The break is flexible. It can fall at any time of day and is built around the person's situation. It is recorded in the care plan, and the carer follows it.
When the person can be left alone. Some people can safely be left on their own for two to three hours, so the carer takes the break in one go. Where we have assessed that someone can be left alone safely for an hour at a time, we ask the carer to split the break into two.
When the person cannot be left alone. We send a visiting carer to cover the break. It is the same visiting carer every day, so the person sees a familiar face and the routine stays settled.
When family live nearby. Some families prefer to cover the break themselves. They arrange this directly with the carer, around their own availability each day. On the days they cannot attend, our visiting carer covers the break.
What it costs. Our £190 per day covers the full live-in care package and does not include cover for the break. Our visiting carer is charged separately at £28 per hour, so two hours of cover is £56. If your relative needs break cover, we add it at the start, and your final quote depends on your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Live-In Carers
What does a live-in carer need in the spare room?
A bed with a mattress cover, bedding and pillows, somewhere to hang clothes, a drawer, and access to a bathroom, private or shared. Wi-Fi helps if the mobile signal in your home is weak.
Does the carer need their own bathroom?
No. A private bathroom is fine, and so is a shared one.
Does the live-in carer eat with the family?
That is up to your family. Some families cook and eat with the carer, and others prefer the carer to eat separately. Either way works well.
Is there an extra charge for the carer's food?
No. There is no extra charge to the family for the carer's food, whether they eat together or separately. When the carer eats separately, a weekly food allowance is provided. It is all inclusive, with no extra cost to the person receiving care or to the family.
Does a live-in carer get a break?
Yes. Every live-in carer has a daily break of about two hours. The timing is flexible and is set out in the care plan.
What if my relative cannot be left alone during the break?
We send a visiting carer, the same person every day, at £28 per hour. Family can also cover the break, and our visiting carer covers the days they cannot.
Can the break be split?
Yes, where we have assessed that the person can safely be left alone for an hour at a time.
Is the break cover included in the £190 per day?
No. The £190 per day covers the full live-in care package and excludes cover for the carer's two-hour break. If your relative needs break cover, we add it at the start, and your final quote depends on your situation.
